Pneumonia can lead to coughing and wheezing that’s so severe, even catching your breath can become a challenge. If you have symptoms of pneumonia, Amrik S. Basi, MD, and the expert practitioners at Elite Urgent Care in Modesto, California, can diagnose and treat you right in the clinic. Before living another day with difficulty breathing, fever, and chills, schedule a pneumonia evaluation. Walk-in visits are welcome, or you can schedule an exam online or over the phone.

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia, which is a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection causes, leads to inflammation of the air sacs in your lungs. As the infection progresses, your air sacs in one or both of your lungs start to fill up with fluid or pus, which leads to that unbearable wheezing and coughing.

Usually, you come into contact with pneumonia-causing organisms by breathing them in. Even though your immune system is supposed to stop these invaders before they infect your lungs, sometimes the germs take charge and cause pneumonia.

What are the symptoms of pneumonia?

Pneumonia symptoms can range from mild to severe, depending on the type of organism infecting your lungs and your overall health. Some of the most common symptoms of pneumonia are:

  • Fever, night sweats, and chills
  • Uncontrollable wet cough
  • Phlegm production with coughing fits
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Chest pain or tightness

Pneumonia can even affect your digestive tract. If this happens, you can wind up with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Before your pneumonia symptoms get any worse, schedule an evaluation at Elite Urgent Care and get started on your personalized treatment plan.

Is there treatment for pneumonia?

Yes. With proper treatment, most healthy adults can recover from pneumonia without experiencing serious complications. But if you have severe pneumonia, are over age 65, have a baby or young child displaying pneumonia symptoms, or have a weakened immune system yourself, pneumonia can quickly become very serious and even life-threatening. In these cases, it’s particularly important to start treatment at the very first pneumonia symptom.

To confirm a pneumonia diagnosis, your practitioner at Elite Urgent Care can request an X-ray of your lungs or a blood draw, which are services offered right in the office. After performing a physical exam, they put together a treatment plan which may include:

  • Prescription cough medicine
  • Antibiotic medication
  • Antiviral medication
  • Pain-relieving drugs
  • Fever-reducing drugs

Your dedicated physician may even recommend an intravenous (IV) therapy session, offered in the clinic at Elite Urgent Care. IV therapy can rehydrate you and get essential immune-boosting nutrients directly into your bloodstream, so you can recover as quickly as possible.

The team at Elite Urgent Care offers walk-in evaluations if you think you have pneumonia. You can also request an appointment online or over the phone.
